Socratic Dialogue

Use this tool to:
  • explore a question together in dialogue to gain collective wisdom
  • deepen students' argumentation

What is it?

In a Socratic Dialogue you are curious about the other person’s story and perspective, and to truly listen you try to ask good questions. It is a dialogue about thinking – in which the participants investigate together what they believe and why they think this. The quest is to gain more wisdom together.

In a Socratic Dialogue, the focus is on one philosophical question that is relevant for the group (but not a question you can Google the answer for). For example: When are you allowed to lie?; Why do we want to work together?; How do you know you own something?

In the dialogue together you are going to formulate an answer, question that answer and investigate the newly formulated concepts.
