How to teach critical thinking with film in your discipline.

‘Normally I drift off after 10 minutes, but I was really into this workshop for the full 2 hours.’

This was not a student saying it, but a lecturer after one of our workshops.

You might think, 'oh well, a teacher.' But those who have been among and in front of teachers know they are often the hardest crowd to please!

Still, this is exactly the audience we are aiming for with upscaling. For teaching Critical Thinking with Film, we are focusing lecturers of applied sciences, in the different disciplines.

Workshops for new disciplines

Over the past  year we have  –visited the following applied sciences programs to support and inspire film-based critical thinking education:

·         HBO Recht (THUAS)

·         Ruimtelijke Ontwikkeling (THUAS)

·         Toegepaste Psychologie (HVA)

We provide the workshops in Dutch as well as English. By doing several activities which showcase how we teach critical thinking with film at International Business, we are workshopping with the lecturers on making it work in the different disciplines.

The focus is on the lecturers, as a meta study on critical thinking by Abrami et al (2015) has shown that good critical thinking education starts with educating the lecturer first.

Types of workshops

What we offer are

1. Workshop for the team: An introduction to what we do for lecturers in your discipline - 1-2 hours

2. Workshop for the students: A follow-up workshop where we  prepare and teach a workshop for your students together , using critical thinking and film  in your discipline (your team and the FlickThink team)

3. Community of Practice workshops: next academic year (25-26) we will be creating on- and offline workshops to work on this craftmanship, trying out new things and reflecting on it. More to come.
